Veterinary Suppliers' Journals

Some of the larger veterinary suppliers published their own journals specifically designed to imitate scholarly medical journals, in order to communicate directly with veterinarians in practice. An alternate product was glossy magazines to communicate indirectly with pet owners in the veterinarian's waiting room or livestock owners on the farm. Companies represented by commercial journals in the Rosen collection include: Hill's Pet Products; Jensen-Salsbery Laboratories; Dow Chemical Co., Pitman-Moore Division; Winthrop Chemical Company; Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition; Fort Dodge Laboratories; Norden Laboratories; and Friskies Pet Care.

Hill's Pet Products published Hill's Pet Products Dialogue in Mississauga, Ontario. The Rosen collection has volume 1, issue 1. In the late 1930s veterinarian Dr. Mark Morris Sr. developed a pet food in his kitchen specifically for a Seeing Eye dog named Buddy suffering from renal failure and insufficiency. In 1948 Dr. Morris developed a partnership with Burton Packing Company to license his pet food formulations. This became Hill’s Pet Nutrition. In 1976 Colgate-Palmolive Company purchased Hill’s Pet Nutrition and continues to offer pet food formulations in “86 countries around the world”.

Jensen-Salsbery Laboratories of Kansas City, Missouri produced The Jen-Sal Journal from 1915 to 1960, "Published in the interests of American veterinarians by Jensen-Salsbery Laboratories." Three issues from 1831, 1942 and 1944 are in the Rosen collection containing descriptions and ordering information about biological and pharmaceutical products, as well as instruments and veterinary supplies.

Allied Veterinarian was published by Dow Chemical Co., Pitman-Moore Division of Indianapolis, Indiana from 1930 to 1964. Two issues from 1936 are in the collection.

Winthrop Chemical Company from Windsor, Ontario published Veterinary Excerpts beginning in 1941. The journal consists of abstracts of articles from various veterinary journals. The Rosen collection contains volume 2(2) 1942 and volume 7 (3) 1947.

Waltham International Focus was issued by the Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition as "The worldwide journal for the companion animal veterinarian". It was published in London from 1991-1993 in English, but also issued in Japanese, Greek, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Dutch. Continued by Waltham Focus in 1994. The Rosen collection has issues from volumes 1-3, 1991-1993 of Waltham International Focus . In 1965, The Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition is established in the U.K. to research the dietary needs and preferences of pets, helping to improve pet nutrition and health".

Other suppliers' journals include the quarterly journal Fort Dodge Biochemic Review from Fort Dodge Laboratories in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The Rosen collection owns volume 8 (4), 1937.

Norden News was a publication from Norden Laboratories in Lincoln, Nebraska. Norden News was continued by Topics in Veterinary Medicine in 1990 published by SmithKline Beecham Animal Health in Exton, Pennsylvania. The Rosen collection contains volume 12 (3), 1937, of Norden News and volume 1 (1), 1990, of Topics in Veterinary Medicine.

Friskies Veterinary Journal from Friskies Pet Care of Glendale, California was "a report on research and development in the small animal field". The Rosen collection has a 1990 issue.
